Modular homes: Less cost, less wait time, same quality

Let’s face it. We live in a world of immediate gratification. If we want something, we can often go online, purchase it and even have it shipped overnight. At the most, we may wait a few days to receive it. Need to transfer money? We no longer need to drive down to the bank and wait in line. We can do it on our phones. Building a new home? Why wait nine months or even a year to move in, when there are other options?

For years, there seemed to be a widespread belief that a stick-built home was better than a modular home when in reality, the main difference between the two is one is built on-site and the other is pre-built off-site and assembled on-site.

According to the National Association of Home Builders, modular homes are “designed and constructed to meet or exceed local building codes allowing 90% of a home to be constructed off-site”, which means fewer delays due to weather or contractor issues. Avoiding those delays also saves you money.

Who doesn’t like a little extra money in their pocket?

So, it’s faster and more affordable. Does that mean it’s less quality?

Not according to the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors who credit the widespread belief that “site-built” homes are better than modular home to the stigma of its “assembly-line origin” and confusion and a misrepresentation of modular homes as manufactured homes (a.k.a mobile homes or trailers). As a matter of fact, following Hurricane Andrew, FEMA completed a study that found modular homes withstood the hurricane’s wind and water better than most other homes.
